Bachelor's Programme in Social Environmental Science (SMIL)

The Bachelor's Programme in Social Environmental Science at the University of Gothenburg is unique in its integration of the environmental and social sciences. Graduates from the programme demonstrate advanced environmental competence across a broad range of disciplines, as well as solid specialist knowledge and an ability to work in networks and project groups.

Courses on master level

Master programme in Ecotoxicology, organized at the Department of Biological and Environmental Sciences (BioEnv)

Roughly 70 new chemicals are described every hour, and modern society uses more than 100 000 of those for different purposes, for example as pesticides, pharmaceuticals or laundry agents. They are embedded in a broad range of products for industry and consumers. All of these chemicals are being potentially released into the environment at some stage of their life cycle.

Ecotoxicology is concerned with the environmental impact of these substances. It aims at characterizing, understanding and finally predicting the effects of toxic chemicals on plant and animal populations, ecological communities and whole ecosystems. As such, Ecotoxicology is the scientific basis for environmental frameworks such as for example the REACH regulation, the Water Framework Directive or the Marine Strategy Framework Directive.

The Master programme includes four master courses in ecotoxicology including Risk assessment.
