FRAM - Centre for Future Chemical Risk Assessment and Management Strategies

FRAM is a multi-disciplinary academic research centre focusing on chemical mixtures and how chemical pollution affects human health and the environment.

Chemicals are currently assessed and managed substance by substance, activity by activity – while chemicals actually occur as complex cocktails in the environment. Despite our quite substantial scientific understanding of combination effects, regulatory action is largely missing.

There is a massive gap between the current practice of chemical assessment and management, and the scientific knowledge of chemical pollution for the environment and human health.

A critical problem of the current system for chemical risk assessment and management is its complexity as well as different and often conflicting perspectives among many actors.

Our research aims to improve chemicals management by:

  • creating conceptual clarity on risk assessment of chemical mixtures
  • generating evidence on the scope of the problem
  • providing policy options and instruments for risk management in different institutional contexts and societal settings.
