Chemical mixtures in rivers, lakes and coastal areas

There is a massive gap between the current practice of chemical assessment and management, and the scientific knowledge of chemical pollution for the environment and human health.

Chemicals are currently assessed and managed substance by substance, activity by activity – while chemicals actually occur as complex cocktails in the environment. Despite our quite substantial scientific understanding of combination effects, regulatory action is largely missing.

A critical problem of the current system for chemical risk assessment and management is its mind-boggling complexity as well as different and often conflicting perspectives among many actors.

In this context, the research generated by FRAM can play an important role for improved chemicals management, by creating conceptual clarity on risk assessment of chemical mixtures, generating evidence on the scope of the problem and providing policy options and instruments for risk management in different institutional contexts and societal settings.
